Out in the ditch, detached from the mound entirely, stands a square tower. It belongs to the rebuilding of 1415 and its job was to hold the ground in front of the bridge — so that an enemy who reached the moat was already under fire before beginning the climb.
It is the most exposed structure on the site and it has paid for that twice over. The tower was badly damaged in the earthquake of 6 February 2023, and reopened to visitors on 17 February 2024 after two phases of restoration.
