Citadel of AleppoAleppo, Syria العربية

The Old City

The Citadel sits at the centre of a World Heritage city. The gate is a doorway, not an ending.

When you come back down the ramp, you are standing at the centre of the Ancient City of Aleppo — the souks, the khans, the madrasas, the Great Umayyad Mosque, the hammams, and the quarter of Jdeideh. All of it is inscribed on the World Heritage List together with the Citadel, as one place.

Provisional information. The highlighted values are placeholders awaiting the site survey and confirmation by the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums.

Each place in the Old City will have its own page here, with walking time from the Citadel gate and whether it is open — beginning with the Great Umayyad Mosque, the covered souks, Khan al-Wazir, and Jdeideh.

Routes

A half-day and a full-day route, beginning at the mound and ending in the souk.
