A fortress is only as good as the speed with which its garrison can arm. This vaulted hall is where the weapons were kept, maintained and issued — unglamorous, and the difference between a defended wall and a decorated one.
Its position inside the enclosure, rather than against the walls, is deliberate: an armoury is the last thing you want within reach of a breach.
