Beneath the floor of the Citadel runs a second Citadel. Passages connect the interior to the forward towers, so that the garrison could reinforce, resupply or withdraw from the outworks without ever appearing above ground.

Tradition holds that some run further — under the moat and out into Aleppo. How far that is true is one of the questions the mound has not finished answering.
