Before the bridge there is a gate. It is the outermost link in the chain and it exists so that the bridge itself is never crowded with people who have not yet been looked at.
This gate took the first blow of the recent war: it was shelled in August 2012, at the start of the fighting in the Old City. It was damaged again in the 2023 earthquake, restored, and reopened in 2024.
